12 Indispensable Apps for the Paperless Private InvestigatorINTERMOUNTAIN PI | 2/18/2020 | 30 INDISPENSABLE APPS FOR THE PAPERLESS PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR

Beginning a hundred years ago officers of the NYPD were issued a memo book to use on the job.  They recorded every detail of their shift.  Even when they ate lunch. Times have changed.  As of yesterday, NYPD officers will now be using an app on their department-issued iPhones. Reporter Corey Kilgannon of the New York Times has an excellent article about how NYPD has embraced new technology.  I hope you’re doing the same.  By way of full disclosure, I use some of these apps.  However, none of them have provided me compensation in exchange for being listed.

THE PAPERLESS PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR

Three years ago I became a paperless private investigator.  Now I’m on a mission to convert other private investigators.  I began using apps not only to save time and money but to save trees.  For example, indispensable apps such as Notability, Evernote, PDF Converter, DocuSign and Speechy, to name a few.  The bottom line is that becoming a paperless private investigator has made my job easier.  I can essentially run my business from my car with a Mac, iPad, Apple Pencil, iPhone and video camera.  Regardless of whether it’s taking photographs, witness statements or writing reports.  For instance, I can take notes, accept credit cards and scan documents with my apps.

APPS FOR NAVIGATION

Obviously, you’re familiar with Google Maps and Bing Maps.  Check out Waze.  It’s Google Maps on steroids.  For example, Waze informs you of accidents, speed traps, landmarks and traffic jams.  However, I never go anywhere without my Garmin GPS.  I work throughout the Intermountain West.  As a result, there are large areas of Utah, Wyoming, etc. where there is poor to no cell coverage.  My Google Map and Bing Map apps often fail.  Therefore, I rely on my Garmin GPS to get me to and from my destinations.

APPS FOR CASE MANAGEMENT

Additionally, case management companies such as Trackops and Crosstrax have their own mobile apps.  Also, apps such as Notability or Evernote can be used to take notes and statements.

APPS FOR SECURE COMMUNICATIONS

Domestic cases often require secure communications.  Apps such as Signal and Wickr offer texting, phone, and video calls with end to end encryption.

APPS FOR CLOUD STORAGE

Speaking of becoming a paperless private investigator, you can back up all your documents with iCloud,Dropbox, Box or any other cloud-based storage system.

APPS FOR DICTATING NOTES AND STATEMENTS

All my investigative notes are dictated in real-time.  Check out apps like Speechy and Dragon Anywhere.  After the dictation just email or text the notes to yourself.  Then simply cut and paste them into your update or report.  On the other hand if I need to take a statement from a witness I use my Apple Pencil and write notes directly on my iPad.  I can even draw diagrams or accident scenes.  Of course you non-Apple folks may use the Android alternatives.

APPS FOR DOCUMENTS AND CONTRACTS

PDF Converter is amazing.  You can convert any type of document to a PDF. Similarly, apps such as DocuSign, HelloSign and Adobe Sign let you send, receive and electronically sign documents.  I use them to send and receive my client service agreement.

Save time posting branded social media content with Hootsuite, Sendible or Socialoomph.

APPS FOR FINANCES

Additionally, you can use Stripe, Square or Clover to accept credit cards.  Plus, manage your accounting with apps like Quickbooks, Freshbooks or Sage.

In conclusion,  the opportunities presented by apps are endless.  And don’t forget the Weather app.  You don’t want to be caught in an unexpected blizzard.  All things considered, apps save time, money, trees and potential headaches.
