3 Private Investigator Tips for Dealing with ClientsINTERMOUNTAIN PI BLOG | 5/26/2020 | 3 TIPS FOR PRIVATE INVESTIGATORS ABOUT CLIENTS

As a private investigator I have worked with many different types of clients.  Including attorneys, small business owners, claims adjusters and private individuals.  Each type of client comes with its own unique challenges.  To that end, here are 3 tips for private investigators about clients:

1. ATTORNEYS  Lawyers are all different.  However, most of them are anal retentive about proper grammar, spelling and punctuation.  Make sure you check and double check your reports.

2. CLAIMS ADJUSTERS  Marketing to claims handlers takes a prolonged effort. It could take a month.  Perhaps a year.  But it’s worth it when you land the client.  Just make sure you’re prepared for the long haul.

Furthermore, you’ll need your detectives skills to find a claims handler’s name, address, email and phone number. This stems from decades ago when a million vendors a day stopped by a claims adjuster’s office.  They did it to schmooze or to drop off donuts and promotional items.  These visits eventually became a major interruption to the work.  As a result, claims offices have locked their doors and discouraged visits unless you have an appointment (by the way, most claims handlers are sick of donuts).3 tips for private investigators about clients

3. DOMESTIC CLIENTS  The last of my 3 tips for private investigators about clients relates to domestic clients.  You should know domestic clients are often examples of confirmation bias.  In other words, they already have an existing theory about the case when they hire you.  They expect your investigation to confirm their beliefs. If the investigation fails to support their theory they will become very unhappy with you.

You will also become part-therapist, part-priest and part-investigator. However, remain professional.  Remember, you are not their friend.  You are a business professional providing a service.

Make sure you know the type of client you’re dealing with ahead of time.  Until next time, this is Private Investigator Scott Fulmer reminding you the game…is afoot
